Band is a wonderful way to experience music. Music stays with a person for a lifetime, and the way in which one can experience it changes. Not only that, but it's fun! I know you have a lot of electives to choose from, and since I want you to join band, I want to make you feel as comfortable about that choice as possible. Below are a list of frequently asked questions, as well as my contact information. Please feel free to give me a call or send me an e-mail about any questions you might have.
1. My child has never played an instrument before. Can he be in band?
Yes! Beginning Band is designed for students who have never played any instrument before. Students will learn from ground zero: music reading, rhythm, breathing, posture, horn carriage, articulation, and everything else! Beginning Band is also suitable for students who have played an instrument before that is not found in band (like piano, guitar, recorder, etc.). During the first week of school, we will have instrument playing tests to see what instrument your child will have the most success with. PLEASE DO NOT OBTAIN ANY INSTRUMENT BEFORE SCHOOL BEGINS AND WITHOUT CONTACTING THE DIRECTOR!
2. Will I have to buy an instrument?
You will not have to buy an instrument, but an instrument will not be provided free of cost. The school owns some instruments that the student can rent for a yearly fee of $50. Other instruments will need to be obtained through a local music store or some other means. Information on instrument selection and rental will be sent home during the first few weeks of school. If there is a financial concern, please contact the director, as sometimes arrangements can be made.
3. I have an instrument at home. Can my child play it in band? Yes, if it's an instrument typically found in band. These instruments include flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, bassoon, euphonium/baritone, tuba, and percussion.
4. What will I need to get for band?
Specific information will be sent home during the first week of school, but things to expect include music books, reeds or mouthpieces, a binder, and accessories like cork grease, valve oil, and slide grease. Information on ordering a uniform polo shirt will also be sent home.
5. My child has played an instrument before. Can he be in Concert or Symphonic Band?
If your child has played an instrument before and would like to play that same instrument in band, you can contact me and we can set up a time for your child to play for me. I will need to hear your child play before he can be in Symphonic Band.
6. What kinds of things will the band do during the school year?
The Symphonic, Concert, and Beginning Bands will have concerts throughout the year, including (but not limited to) a Holiday Concert, a Spring Concert, and Music Performance Assessment performance. Symphonic Band will also play at some Home Football games, as well as playing a few times with Wakulla High School's marching band. These events are required. By choosing to join band, you understand that you will need to be a part of all the required band events, or it will be reflected in the student's grade. Band students will also have the option of participating in fundraisers. Band members also have the opportunity to audition for All-State Bands and Orchestras, All-County Bands, and play in Solo and Ensemble Festival.
7. Will there be any Music fundraisers? and if so can I volunteer?
Yes! We will be doing a number of fundraisers this year, I will be sending out more information regarding to student/ parent volunteering as it becomes available.
8.I'm concerned about the financial aspect of band. What should I do?
If buying the uniform or renting an instrument is a concern, please contact the director. Arrangements can often be made to help accommodate families.
